The Mob Song lyrics (or “Kill the Beast”) is a song featured in the 1991 animated classic tale of “Beauty and the Beast”. The tune sees Gaston, the evil villain in the movie, inspire fear in the villagers about the scary beast who will supposedly kill them.
In reality, Gaston plans to kill the Beast after he discovers that Belle has romantic feelings for him. Gaston rallies the villagers by playing on their fears. He plans to murder his rival and take Belle for himself. He then leads the angry mob up to his castle so that he can murder the Beast while the rest steal the castle’s treasure.
The Mob Song Trivia
- Gaston makes an allusion to Shakespeare’s Macbeth by borrowing a quote from Lady Macbeth, one of the antagonists of the story, the original phrase being “But screw your courage to the sticking place, and we’ll not fail.”
- Although the Bimbettes and the village women do not participate in “The Mob Song” at all in the film, they do participate in the 2017 remake of the film and in some versions of Beauty and the Beast Live on Stage.
- The book Sigmund Romberg says the song is “a cinematic recreation of Nelson Eddy’s nocturnal march ‘Stouthearted Men’ in the 1940 musical film New Moon.
- “The Mob Song” was not originally present in the film, but was added in later. According to Don Hahn, the song’s creation had largely been influenced by Howard Ashman’s final days in his struggle against AIDS.
- Lyricist Howard Ashman, who had AIDS by the time he wrote the song and viewed the Beast’s curse as an allegory for AIDS, was inspired by public sentiment at the time against AIDS and the gay community when writing the song’s lyrics.[
- Don Hahn, who produced Beauty and the Beast, further said that the lyrics were written as “almost a metaphor for” the stigmatization associated with people living with HIV/AIDS.
- For the 2017 live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast, Alan Menken adjusted the lyrics to reflect LeFou starting to turn against Gaston.
The Mob Song Lyrics – 1991 Beauty and the Beast
[Mob]
We’re not safe until he’s dead
He’ll come stalking us at night
Set to sacrifice our children to his monstrous appetite
He’ll wreak havoc on our village if we let him wander free
[Gaston]
So it’s time to take some action, boys
It’s time to follow me
Through the mist, through the woods
Through the darkness and the shadows
It’s a nightmare, but it’s one exciting ride
Say a prayer, then we’re there
At the drawbridge of a castle
And there’s something truly terrible inside
It’s a beast; he’s got fangs, razor-sharp ones
Massive paws, killer claws for the feast
Hear him roar, see him foam
But we’re not coming home
Till he’s dead, good and dead!
Kill the Beast!
[Mob]
Light your torch, mount your horse
[Gaston]
Screw your courage to the sticking place
[Mob]
We’re counting on Gaston to lead the way
Through the mist, through the wood
Where within a haunted castle
Something’s lurking that you don’t see every day
It’s a beast, one as tall as a mountain
We won’t rest till he’s good and deceased
Sally forth! Tally ho!
Grab your sword! Grab your bow!
Praise the Lord and here we go!
We don’t like what we don’t understand
In fact, it scares us
And this monster is mysterious at least
Bring your guns! Bring your knives!
Save your children and your wives
We’ll save our village and our lives
We’ll kill the Beast!
[Castleware]
Hearts ablaze, banners high
We go marching into battle
Unafraid, although the danger just increased
[Mob]
Raise the flag! Sing the song!
Here we come, we’re fifty strong
And fifty Frenchmen can’t be wrong
Let’s kill the Beast!
