About The Little Mermaid
The 1989 American animated musical fantasy film, The Little Mermaid was produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. It is loosely based on the Danish fairy tale “The Little Mermaid” written by Hans Christian Andersen.
The Little Mermaid is credited with breathing life back into the art of Disney animated feature films. It also marked the start of an era that became known as the Disney Renaissance. The film won two Academy Awards for Best Original Song (“Under the Sea”) and Best Original Score.
The 28th Disney animated feature film tells the story of Ariel teenage mermaid princess, who dreams of becoming human. She falls in love with a human prince named Eric, which leads her to make a magic deal with Ursula, the sea witch, to become human and be with him.
The Little Mermaid was written and directed by John Musker and Ron Clements. It was produced by Musker and Howard Ashman. Ashman also wrote the film’s songs with Alan Menken. Menken also composed the film’s score. The film stars the voices of Jodi Benson, Christopher Daniel Barnes, Pat Carroll, Samuel E. Wright, Jason Marin, Kenneth Mars, and Buddy Hackett.
Walt Disney originally planned to put the story in a proposed package film containing Andersen’s stories, but eventually ended up scrapping that project. While working on The Great Mouse Detective (1986), Clements, Musker, and their team decided to adopt the fairy story and pitched it to Disney Studios chairman Jeffery Katzenberg.
Katzenberg first rejected it because he thought it was too similar to a planned sequel to the 1984 film “Splash”. However, after thinking about it for some time, he eventually agreed to let them produce it.
Ashman became involved, bringing in Menken. With supervision from Katzenberg, they made a Broadway-style structure with musical numbers as the staff was working on Oliver & Company (1988).
Katzenberg initially warned that the movie would earn less since it primarily appealed to females. He eventually changed his mind and became convinced that it would be Disney’s first blockbuster hit.
