About The Lion King
The Lion King is an American animated musical drama film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures in 1994. It was its fifth animated film produced during a period known as the Disney Renaissance, and the 32nd Disney animated feature film overall.
Its original songs were written by lyricist Tim Rice and composer Elton John, with a score by Hans Zimmer. The film features an ensemble voice cast that includes Matthew Broderick, James Earl Jones, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, Moira Kelly, Nathan Lane, Ernie Sabella, Rowan Atkinson, Robert Guillaume, Madge Sinclair, Whoopi Goldberg, Cheech Marin, and Jim Cummings.
John and Rice wrote five original songs for the film (“Circle of Life”, “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King”, “Be Prepared”, “Hakuna Matata”, and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight”), with John’s performance of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” playing over the end credits.
Hans Zimmer composed the score for the film. He was hired based on his work in two films with African settings, A World Apart (1988) and The Power of One (1992). Zimmer complimented the score with traditional African music and choir elements arranged by Lebo M. Zimmer’s partners Mark Mancina and Jay Rifkin helped with arrangements and song production.
The Lion King was directed by Rob Minkoff and Roger Allers (in their feature directorial debuts). The film was produced by Don Hahn, from a screenplay by Irene Mecchi, Jonathan Roberts, and Linda Woolverton.
