About “A Whole New World”
“A Whole New World” is the key song from the 1992 classic animated feature Aladdin. Aladdin and Jasmine sang it in the film. It was composed by Alan Menken, and the lyrics were written by Tim Rice.
The original version was sung by Brad Kane (Aladdin’s voice) and Lea Salonga (Jasmine’s voice). It is about the new world they are about to discover together while their love blossoms.
The pop version was released on November 5, 1992, and was later performed by Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle. Bryson and Belle also performed it at the 65th Academy Awards and later won Best Song.
“A Whole New World” was also nominated for AFI’s 100 Years…100 Songs, as one of 15 from Disney and one of 17 from an animated movie to be nominated. The ones that eventually made the cut were “When You Wish Upon A Star” (#7), “Some Day My Prince Will Come” (#19), “Beauty and the Beast” (#62), and “Hakuna Matata” (#99)

A “Whole New World” Song Facts & Trivia
- This song broke Whitney Houston’s 14-week run at the top of the Hot 100 with “I Will Always Love You.” It became the first song from a Disney animated film to top the chart. Its Oscar win for Best Original Song also beat out two of Houston’s tracks from her movie The Bodyguard – “I Have Nothing” and “Run To You.”
- This won an Oscar for Best Song From A Motion Picture and a Grammy Award for Song Of The Year.
- Alan Menken wrote the music, and Tim Rice wrote the lyrics. Menken also composed music for the films Beauty and the Beast, The Little Mermaid, and Enchanted and wrote the score for Aladdin. Rice is also a Disney favorite and wrote lyrics for Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, including the massive hit “Can You Feel The Love Tonight.”
- Disney initially sought singers like Barbra Streisand and George Michael to guarantee a chart-topping hit. To Tim Rice’s relief, both performers turned it down. He wanted the song to become a hit on its own merit, not by the star power of its singers.
- Peabo Bryson also recorded a Disney duet with Celine Dion, the title track for Beauty and the Beast. It peaked at #9 on the Hot 100 and won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
“A Whole New World” lyrics
Lyrics from “Aladdin”
Written by Alan Menken and Tim Rice
Aladdin:
I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we’re only dreaming
Jasmine:
A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I’m way up here
It’s crystal clear
That now I’m in a whole new world with you
Aladdin: Now I’m in a whole new world with you
Jasmine:
Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
A Whole New World (Aladdin: Don’t you dare close your eyes)
A hundred thousand things to see (Aladdin: Hold your breath – it gets better)
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back to where I used to be
Aladdin: A whole new world (Jasmine: Every turn a surprise)
With new horizons to pursue (Jasmine: Every moment red letter)
Aladdin and Jasmine:
I’ll chase them anywhere
There’s time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you
Aladdin:
A whole new world (Jasmine: A whole new world)
That’s where we’ll be (Jasmine: That’s where we’ll be)
Aladdin and Jasmine:
A thrilling chase
A wondrous place
For you and me

“Aladdin” Movie Facts
- This was the first major animated film that was advertised on the strength of having a major movie star providing one of its voices (Robin Williams). This has since become the norm with animated features.
- This film became the 14th (and the first animated movie) to gross more than $200,000,000.
- When the film was first released on VHS in October 1993, it sold over 10.8 million copies in its first week and went on to sell over 25 million in total. This record stood for only two years when it was beaten by the release of The Lion King (1994).
- The Genie’s celebrity impersonations are (in order) Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ed Sullivan, Groucho Marx, William F. Buckley, Señor Wences, Robert De Niro, Carol Channing, Arsenio Hall, Walter Brennan, Mary Hart, Ethel Merman, Rodney Dangerfield, Jack Nicholson, and Peter Lorre. Disney replaced the game show host for release in India with a cricket commentator.
- Nobody applauded after the big song numbers in the movie’s preview screenings. The animators wanted applause so somebody stuck the Genie with an “Applause” sign at the end of “Friend Like Me”. The joke worked, and the sign was kept for the movie.
- Jafar, at first, was more hot-tempered, while Iago was a cool, haughty British type. The filmmakers felt that having Jafar lose his temper too much made him less menacing, so the two characters’ personalities were switched around.
- HIDDEN MICKEY: Seen briefly on Rajah’s head during his second transformation.
